Learning Beyond Classrooms, Touching Lives Through Empathy
As part of their academic and social outreach programs, a group of students from Millath College visited Manovikas Centre, an institution functioning under the National Trust, dedicated to the education, care, and rehabilitation of persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Understanding Inclusive Support Systems
The visit provided the students with a valuable opportunity to witness the multi-disciplinary support framework offered at Manovikas. They toured various blocks, including:
- Classrooms for cognitive and behavioral learning
- Therapy units for physiotherapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy
- Psychological counseling rooms
- Vocational training areas where children and young adults learn life skills
- Recreational and play zones designed with accessibility in mind
Meaningful Interactions, Powerful Impressions
More than just an academic exposure, the visit was a touching human experience. The students interacted with the children, assisted in activities, and engaged in conversations that offered glimpses into the daily lives, challenges, and triumphs of the residents. For many, the experience reshaped their perspectives on disability and inclusion.
Voices of Change
Teachers and coordinators from both institutions emphasized the importance of such visits in building a more empathetic society. Students expressed their desire to continue volunteering and raise awareness about accessibility and inclusive education.
Gratitude & Future Ties
The staff at Manovikas Centre expressed heartfelt thanks to Millath College for their initiative and open-hearted participation. The visit is expected to be the beginning of a deeper collaboration in the areas of service learning, awareness campaigns, and community development.
