On December 3, 2023, the students of Manovikas Special School for Mentally Disabled Children, Kollam, made their mark at the Kollam district-level celebrations of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. The occasion, commemorated worldwide, serves as a powerful reminder of the need for inclusivity, equality, and respect for the rights and dignity of individuals with disabilities.
Held at various venues across Kollam, the event brought together children from different special schools and institutions across the district. With a vibrant lineup of competitions and cultural activities, the day created a stage for talent, determination, and joy to shine through.
Outstanding Participation & Achievements
Our students participated in a wide range of events, including:
- Drawing and painting competitions
- Cultural performances such as dance and music
- Craft and skill-based displays
- Thematic presentations on inclusion and empowerment
The creativity and confidence with which the children performed were truly commendable. Months of preparation under the dedicated guidance of the Manovikas teaching and support staff culminated in a series of proud victories. Our students secured top positions in several categories, earning trophies, medals, and certificates.
More than just awards, the recognition was a celebration of the children's resilience, spirit, and the power of inclusive education. The applause they received from the audience and dignitaries filled the atmosphere with warmth and admiration.
Prize Distribution: A Moment of Honour
The prize distribution ceremony was one of the most touching moments of the day. Distinguished guests from the district administration, social welfare department, and disability rights organizations graced the stage to present the awards.
As the names of our students were called out, the hall echoed with cheers. Their proud walks to the stage and beaming smiles upon receiving the awards captured the essence of the celebration: every child has a spark, and with the right support, they can light up the world.
The ceremony was not just about accolades—it was about visibility, validation, and the joy of achievement. It was a day that reinforced their self-esteem and inspired everyone present to work toward a more inclusive future.
A Voice for Inclusion and Awareness
The event also featured short speeches and messages from educators, parents, and officials, all highlighting the importance of recognizing abilities over disabilities. The common theme across the addresses was clear: inclusion is not charity—it’s a right.
Manovikas Special School was proudly recognized for its ongoing commitment to the education and empowerment of children with intellectual disabilities. Through its structured curriculum, therapy support, vocational training, and individualized care, the school continues to nurture the unique strengths of each student.
Community, Compassion, and Commitment
This day was more than just a competition—it was a celebration of community and compassion. Parents, teachers, volunteers, and organizers came together with a shared vision: to create a space where every child feels valued, respected, and empowered.
For Manovikas, this event reaffirmed the values that the school upholds every day—dignity, opportunity, and hope for all. The success of the students was a reflection of the consistent teamwork between educators and families who believe in the potential of every child.
